The building block around which any card frame is build is the plug-in-unit or circuit board it has to carry. The specification DIN 41494 has been evolved to create a standard range of sizes for these plug-in units and boards and also for the compatible card frame to house them. This provides the end user with the advantage of being able to mechanically combine electronic modules and subunits of various manufacturers within the elctronic packaging of other manufacturers.
The overall dimensions of the board and units are covered by DIN 41949, IEC Publication 297 and ANSI/IEEE 1101.10.
The height dimension for card frames in the following extracts from DIN 41494 is given in multiples of 'U', 1U=44,45mm=1,75''.
The width dimension is given in terms of HP ( or can also be called E or TE) 1HP = 5,08mm = 0,2''.
